Transformation by Berg

Transformation by Carol Berg

Excellent book!

I loved it and am now ordering the others in the series.

Berg builds a believable world where slaves are truly treated like property. The story is told through the first person view of Seyonne who was taken as a slave when the Empire took over his lands. He went through rites which took away his power, his people were strong magic users, and the Empire forced them through the rite that took that away from them and made them better fit to be slaves. The story starts as he is bought by the Heir to the Empire, Prince Aleksander. Right away he is caught up in intriques which keep him in his owner's presence. And when the ambassador from the people who the Emperor is getting friendly with shows up and Seyonne recognizes him as a demon....things go from intrique to worse intrique. The demons want Aleksander, but Seyonne recognizes something in the man that makes him remember his old life and makes him want to keep the prince safe.

In doing so, he must take the prince to the small settlement of his people that still exists and learn hard facts about just how he ended up becoming a slave.

This is definitely a must read book for anyone who loves fantasy.

The Substitute Sister by Lisa Childs

The Substitute Sister by Lisa Childs (Harlequin Intrique)

I looked on Amazon, but they only have a listing for the large print edition of this - and it has no information yet so I saw no point in linking to it.

This is an example of when Harlequin gets it right. There are twins - and it starts out setting you up to believe the "dead" twin is still alive. However, there are many twists in this story.

Interesting. I haven't read Intriques in a while so this was a pleasantly good read. I stopped reading them when they all ended up being about the same thing - doctors or nurses or missing children.

This was good and worth a read if you like a quick mystery/romance story.

Crawlers by Shirley

Crawlers by John Shirley.

Good book. Nice action and interesting premise. One that has been done before - technology created by the government surpasses their expectations and pretty much makes a run at taking over.

The pacing was good, there was a lot going on and a lot of characters, although half of the ones he introduced was only to build the sympathy and horror when they ended up dying five pages later.

I had a lot more to say about this book - but I put off posting this and I've forgotten most of it now.

That said - this is an excellent book. Read it if you get the chance.
