The High Lord - Canavan

The High Lord (Bk. 3 The Black Magician Trilogy) - Trudi Canavan

Last book of her trilogy, here we find out the secret of the High Lord and just why he does what he does. Sonea joins in trying to protect the city and finds herself falling in love with the least likely of the characters.

I loved this book - although I wish it could have ended a bit differently in one regard. There are quite a few dangling possible plots. It will be interesting if she does more with this world she has created. She's definitely done her worldbuilding to bring it and the characters to life.

Much Ado About You - James

Much Ado About You - by Eloisa James

Historical Romance set in Regency England surrounding four sisters and their new guardian - who was not expecting them to be the age they are.

A bit slow in parts, the book almost seems to dwell more on the other sisters than the sister who is the main focus of this story.

Not a bad book at all, it is a bit more sedate than other Historical Romances I've read by this author.

Ill Wind (Weather Warden bk.1) - Caine

Ill Wind by Rachel Caine

This is book one of her Weather Warden series. Modern day setting where Wardens (a semi-secret organization- governments might know about them but regular people do not) who are able to get in touch with the elements keep watch over Earth to keep Mother Nature from wiping us from the face of it. They use djinns to broaden and suppliment their own natural powers.

Joanne is one of these Wardens and when she is given a demon mark and believed to have killed her boss she must seek out the most powerful Warden known to see if he can help her.

The story is fast-paced told from the 1st person view of Joanne who is a hip, fun character and her observations keep the story going at a clip pace.

Definitely a book to read if you like fantasy - or even if you just like wise-cracking heroines.

Micro-reviews

I've been lax, I know. So in the interest of keeping a complete list of the books I've read this will be the micro-version of the past month's reading.

The Wyrm by Stephen Laws

Good book. A bit of a slow start but once the Wyrm has risen it gets fast and heavy. A something of a vampire/zombie tale.

The Manor by Scott Nicholson

Recommended. I love haunted houses and this one is quite shockily filled with ghosts. Definitely worth a read if you like horror.

Dean Koontz's Frankenstein by Koontz and Anderson

More science fiction than horror - if you're looking for an easy read with characters you could check off a stereotype list - this is it.

A Summer to Remember by Mary Balogh

Yummy Regency romance with great characters and great sense of setting.

All Things Beautiful by Cathy Maxwell

Another Regency era romance. Poor Lady gets married off to Rich Businessman. Good.

I have a feeling I'm missing one...but I don't think I am.

Hopefully back to fuller reviews this month.
